Safety is our top priority at Inter Pipeline, and part of our commitment to safety includes regularly scheduled emergency response simulations to ensure we are as prepared as possible should we ever have an incident.
Although our goal is zero incidents, we invest heavily in training and preparedness in order to respond promptly, safely and efficiently in the unlikely event of an incident. Since 2014, Inter Pipeline has added around $3.5 million in emergency response equipment and conducts upwards of 50 training exercises annually. We also operate state-of-the-art control centres and leak detection systems that provide real-time operations monitoring. Recently, an emergency equipment response exercise on the Clearwater River in Fort McMurray brought together workers from various districts to deploy an instream anchor boom, simulating our response to a pipeline emergency.
“At Inter Pipeline, we are unwavering in our commitment to safety, and conducting annual response exercises ensures we are prepared to respond quickly in the unlikely event an incident occurs,” said Jeff Marchant, Senior Vice President, Transportation.
Practice Makes Perfect
Response exercises allow our workforce the opportunity to practice the knowledge and skills learned in training and identify areas of future training priority to improve current emergency procedures or equipment. Our Field Initial Response and Support Team (FIRST) and Business Support Team participate in exercises each year, using the Incident Command System (ICS) to effectively manage our response.
While we take steps to ensure our employees are prepared to act in the event on an incident, the most critical and responsible emergency preparedness strategy is to prevent an incident from occurring. We combine careful planning with regular training, equipment deployments and mock emergency exercises. Learn more about our focus on safety and emergency management procedures here.
