40 Days & 40 Nights: Cochrane Extraction Plant’s Maintenance Turnaround
This summer, the Cochrane Extraction Plant (CEP) completed a planned maintenance turnaround, bringing together employees, contractors and support teams to execute critical maintenance, inspections and facility upgrades that support the long-term reliability and performance of the plant.
Planned turnarounds are essential to maintaining safe and reliable operations. They provide an opportunity to perform work that cannot be completed while the plant is operating, helping ensure the facility continues to run safely and efficiently for years to come.
During the 40-day event, teams completed a range of maintenance and optimization projects, including the replacement of the plant’s D-401 turbine after 56 years of service, extensive exchanger cleaning and inspection work, and several upgrades designed to improve facility performance and support future growth.

Several projects completed during the turnaround will contribute to improved operational efficiency and increased facility capacity, helping ensure the plant continues to meet customer needs while supporting safe and sustainable operations for decades to come. The turnaround also required close coordination to minimize impacts on nearby residents and businesses, and the patience and understanding of the Cochrane community throughout the work was greatly appreciated.
